TALKS | Sound Systems Today

What is Public Access and what does it mean to you!

In today's technological growing world, audio systems of various types are part of everyone's daily life. Almost every home has a stereo or a simple radio, businesses use some type of intercom/paging system, or even the more complex sound reinforcement systems commonly known or the Public Address (PA) systems all used by amateurs and professionals for public address and music performance.

PA is a very common term used when hiring speakers for events, concerts or show. It refers to a system that is usually used for speech, conveying announcements or information to a group of listeners in an amplified way. This depends on the application like a high school gymnasium or classroom sound systems, hotel conference room, etc.

So, with that in mind, if you wanted a PA system to use for announcements at a fete, an outdoor sporting event, or public rally, you would likely need speakers specifically designed for that use, a none complex system would be best to use for these uses.

For set ups that include large performances with musicians then sound reinforcement is the system to go for.

If you want to play music or have performances as well as make announcements then you would require a different type of speaker which could handle both. With regards to sound reinforcement for bands, DJs and live music, this requires a lot more power and will usually involve sub woofers which are added to enhance the bass frequencies that this music requires that means hence this will provide you with a full-frequency output of an audio. Therefore, sound reinforcement may be full range for music or vocal range.

Sound reinforcement systems are not as simple as home stereos. Although they operate on the same principles, they require a higher level of understanding from their users, but a good reinforcement system will almost by definition work as a PA also.
