Different Types of Microphones

Did you know there are different types of microphones used for various purposes.

Before buying a microphone you should consider what type of microphone you're looking for, what will be the set up, is it for vocals, recording or used for instruments. Without us getting very technical, involving polar patterns which may just confuse everyone with all the graphs and specs mentioned, you have to make sure to get the right microphone for you!

Depending on what you would need, microphones fall under the umbrella of being either Dynamic, Condenser and Ribbon microphones (ribbon's are less commonly used). Dynamic microphones are mostly used with low-mid frequency instruments; drums and electric guitars, whereas condenser microphones are mostly used with high frequency instruments; acoustic guitars, cymbals and pianos.

Dynamic Mics

They are more adaptable and reliable, so starting with a dynamic microphone is a good option, they are reliable when it comes to capturing sounds as well as at high pressure levels, they aren't only used for high SPL (Sound Pressure Level) as they can be used and have a good outcome in quieter surroundings.

Uses; Vocals & Instruments

Dynamic Microphones; SM58, SM7B, SM57, Super 55

Condenser Mics

Are great when it comes to recording instruments and will capture the sound thoroughly as long as the sound pressure isn't too much for them to handle. Since they don't actually use moving coils compared to the dynamic mics, they are capacitors which results with the sound quality improved. They are recommended to be used for recording in studios, but keep in mind that they require power so using a mixer, direct box and phantom power are a must. Taking special care of them is needed as they aren't as sturdy as a dynamic mic.

Uses; In-Studio Vocal Recording & Instruments

Condenser Microphones; KSM44, KSM32, KSM9, KSM137

Ribbon Mics

Once very popular and successful (especially within the radio industry) the light metal within the mics were used to pick up the speed of air, which would capture higher notes without the harshness yet give off a vintage voice and feel to it.

Uses; Acoustic Guitars

Ribbon Microphones; KSM313
